What is needed in a new kitchen?

While it’s essential to create a space that you’ll absolutely love, there are also a few ‘must-haves to bring into the mix when redesigning your kitchen. The great news is that when using an experienced and talented designer, they will be able to incorporate these without harming the overall aesthetic you’re hoping to achieve.

What should you include in your kitchen refurbishment?

When speaking with your kitchen designer, ask if it’s feasible to add the following:

Island/dining table

Merging the two will give you ample space should you need it when prepping meals, like when you’re throwing a dinner party for more guests than usual.

The other advantage is that it will give you a space to sit with your partner or a visitor for a cup of tea, cake and catch up. The kitchen is quickly becoming the new ‘living room’, so give yourself this option by incorporating it into your kitchen refurbishment.

Eye-level kitchen appliances

The fantastic thing about a kitchen overhaul is that you can make everything work for you. Why bend down to check how your cookies are baking, or your chicken is roasting if you don’t have to? Similarly, why open the fridge door and let all the coolness out when there’s the option to glance in through a glass window in the door?

There are some fantastic innovations out there, so it’s worth speaking to your designer about personalising your cooking experiences.

Storage

Whether you’re sprucing up your kitchen for your own enjoyment or ahead of a sale, every kitchen needs as much storage space as possible. In addition to your usual cabinets and drawers, look for ways to create secret storage compartments. Can you install a spice rack within your kitchen island, for example? Or perhaps a small larder for all your essentials?

Not only will this help you stay organised, but it will also prevent the build-up of clutter over the years, keeping your kitchen looking as fresh as the day it was installed.

What does a basic kitchen need?

Once you’ve fully designed your new kitchen and the installation has been completed, it’s time to add even more of your character with the finishing touches.

Here are some of the must-have items for a fully functioning kitchen:

Utensils

Whether these are going to be on display in a cute holder or stowed away in a draw, every kitchen needs the following:

  • Knives, forks and spoons.
  • Block of knives.
  • Measuring spoons and cups.
  • Wooden spoons.
  • Tongs.
  • Can opener.
  • Chopping board.
  • Grater and zester.
  • Peeler.
  • Fish slice.
  • Whisk.
  • Salad spinner.
  • Colander.
  • Small sieve.
  • Stick blender.

If you’ve installed your smart storage, there will be plenty of places to stow these away for a clean and minimalist look.

Cookware

Whether you’re a chef in the making or a make-a-meal-in-15-minutes kind of cook, here is a list of the cookware you won’t be able to live without:

  • Frying pan – preferably non-stick.
  • Roasting pans and baking tins.
  • Stockpot.
  • Saucepans of varying sizes.
  • Casserole dish.
  • Wok.
